Shelter Staff Outraged After Family Abandons Senior Dog Of 7 Years For New Baby

For a dog, there is no greater joy than being a cherished member of a loving family. Their entire world revolves around their favorite humans, and the bond they share is one that should last a lifetime.

Sadly, not all dogs are given the forever home they deserve, and the story of Rooney, a seven-year-old dog, is a heartbreaking reminder of this harsh reality.

A Life Turned Upside Down

Rooney had spent his entire life in the warmth and comfort of a family home, never knowing the loneliness and fear that comes with being abandoned.

However, just after his seventh birthday, his world was shattered when his family decided to surrender him to a local shelter.

The reason? They were expecting a baby and felt they could no longer give Rooney the attention he needed.

Suddenly, Rooney found himself in a dark and unfamiliar place, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smells of other terrified dogs.

According to a Facebook post by Lone Star Dog Ranch & Dog Ranch Rescue, the shelter was at maximum capacity, forcing them to euthanize dogs daily to make room for more surrendered pets.

The Fury of the Rescuers

When the staff at Dog Ranch Rescue, a non-profit organization in Anna, Texas, learned of Rooney’s plight, they were determined to save him.

Ricky, one of their employees, drove to the shelter, paid the $17 fee, and brought Rooney back to the sanctuary.

Upon seeing the heartbroken expression on Rooney’s face, the staff at Dog Ranch Rescue were overwhelmed with a mixture of sadness and fury.

In their Facebook post, they directly addressed Rooney’s former owner, questioning whether they felt any remorse for their decision.

I always wonder did it make you feel bad while you stood in line? did you look back at him when you walked away, did you see his face asking you what the hell? did you forget about him 5 minutes later? 10 minutes maybe?

they wrote.

The post continued

I am so sick and tired of people ‘getting rid of their dogs’ because you had a baby, a change in your life, blah blah blah blah blah…I know some are more compassionate about it than I am but I’m just not…

A Promise for a Brighter Future

Despite the trauma he had endured, Rooney remained a sweet and gentle soul. Ricky reported that the senior dog walked past other dogs without incident and allowed himself to be touched all over.

The rescue placed Rooney in isolation to monitor his health and give him a quiet space to relax and feel safe again.

In their Facebook post, Dog Ranch Rescue made a promise to Rooney: “Welcome to Dog Ranch Rescue Rooney, you are a senior now but we will find you a home that won’t throw you away again because they had a blip in their life.

As Rooney begins his journey towards healing, his story serves as a powerful reminder of the commitment and responsibility that comes with being a pet owner.

A dog’s love is unconditional, and they deserve nothing less than a lifetime of devotion and care in return.

May Rooney’s tale inspire others to open their hearts and homes to senior dogs in need, offering them the love, stability, and happiness they so richly deserve in their golden years.
