Kacey Musgraves has landed at No. 10 on Taste of Country’s ranking of the 25 Most Important Modern Country Artists, accompanied by a staff-curated list of her top 10 songs.
The Golden, Texas native holds a distinctive place in contemporary country music — an artist who built a loyal following and Grammy recognition without ever becoming a fixture of mainstream radio. The list is part of a broader series that began June 13, releasing one artist ranking per day and counting down to the No. 1 spot on July 7. Each entry pairs an artist’s placement with a selection of their best songs, chosen by Taste of Country staff using chart performance, streaming numbers, ticket sales, awards, and recent releases as criteria.
From Nashville Star to Grammy Winner
Musgraves first entered the public eye in 2007, finishing seventh on the USA Network competition series Nashville Star. Five years later she secured a national recording contract, and in 2013 she released “Merry Go ‘Round” as her debut single — a song that went on to win her a Grammy Award. That same year’s album, Same Trailer Different Park, contributes three songs to her top 10 list, among them her most recognized track, “Follow Your Arrow.”
Her catalog draws heavily from personal experience, yet her writing rarely feels confessional in a narrow sense. Instead, she has built a reputation for translating small, everyday emotions into songs that resonate far beyond their origins — whether the subject is empowerment, heartbreak, or simple wonder. Songs from four of her six non-holiday studio albums appear on the list, and while few of the selections were mainstream hits in the traditional sense, the staff argues they are built to endure.
A Catalog Built for the Long Game
What separates Musgraves from many of her peers, according to the list’s framing, is the balance between lyrical sophistication and melodic accessibility. Her arrangements invite casual listeners while rewarding closer attention — a combination that has fueled sold-out arena tours and Grammy wins without requiring radio dominance.
The No. 1 song on her individual top 10 comes not from Same Trailer Different Park but from a later album, leaving room for anticipation as fans work through the ranked selections. The full series countdown continues daily through July 7, when the most important modern country artist will be revealed.
