The drama, which returned for its second season on July 23, 2026, follows Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel), a Texas rancher, and Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly), a former concert pianist who returns to her hometown after a career setback, running a local dancehall. The two share a friendship stretching back to high school that gradually evolves into something far more complicated. Season 2 ends with the couple reunited after Quinn pursued a relationship with another man — and this time, their reconciliation feels more permanent.
What the Books Reveal
The series draws from a popular book series by author Jodi Thomas, and while the television adaptation has not followed the source material precisely, the books offer a telling roadmap. In Thomas’s novels, Staten and Quinn move slowly — progressing through a series of casual encounters before acknowledging genuine romantic feelings. The turning point comes when Quinn becomes pregnant with Staten’s child. The two decide to keep the baby and, in doing so, recognize that what they share is love.
