American Idol Season 24 winner Hannah Harper is opening up about the profound personal sacrifice her husband made to stand beside her as her music career took off.
Harper, a mother of three from Willow Springs, Missouri, captured the nation’s attention during her run on the competition show, drawing on a background steeped in gospel and bluegrass performance with her family band. After stepping away from music to raise her children, she returned to songwriting, began sharing her work online, and ultimately claimed the Season 24 title. Her original song “String Cheese” connected deeply with audiences and marked her as a standout from early in the competition.
A Family Affair On The Road
Since her Idol victory, Harper has kept family at the center of everything — quite literally. Her parents, both brothers, and her three children have all joined her on tour, each taking on their own role within the operation. “My entire family is on the road with me — both of my brothers, my parents, my kids,” Harper told Fox News. “And I think it’s so special that everyone has a role and a job, and everyone feels included.”
Devon Mendenhall Steps Away From Law Enforcement
Harper married Devon Mendenhall in April 2018 at age 18, and the couple welcomed their first child a year later. As her music career accelerated, Devon — who had spent eight years in law enforcement — made the decision to leave that profession entirely and step into the role of her tour manager.
“My husband was in law enforcement for eight years and put his badge up just so that I could pursue this,” Harper said. “And he was doing insurance there for a little while. We were going to try to just do, like, a work-on-the-road kind of thing. And then music just got too busy. And he was like, ‘You know what? I think I want to be tour manager.’ And I was like, ‘That’s perfect. I think you should do that.'”
Harper is candid about what Devon’s decision means to her. “More than anything, I feel honored that he was willing to step down from his position,” she said. “A lot of men wouldn’t do that. I think their pride would get in the way, and that man would bend over backwards for anything that I asked him to do.”
With her entire family unit now built around her touring life, Harper’s post-Idol trajectory is shaping up to be as much a family story as a musical one.
