Randy Travis made a cancer patient’s lifelong dream come true on July 31, surprising Bunnia Greenwood with a personal visit to her room at City of Hope Chicago, a facility specializing in cancer treatment.
Greenwood has endured multiple cancer diagnoses and years of ongoing treatment at the Chicago center. Through it all, Travis’s music has been a constant source of comfort. According to City of Hope Chicago, her family and friends worked to make a face-to-face meeting with the country legend possible — and the institution shared video of the encounter on its Instagram page.
A Surprise That Started With a Poster
When the visit began, Greenwood believed she was only receiving a large signed poster of Travis. The gift alone left her visibly overjoyed. Then Travis’s wife, Mary Davis Travis, guided him into the hospital room, and the moment took on an entirely different weight.
Travis, who has lived with aphasia since suffering a stroke in 2013, communicates with difficulty — but the video makes his emotions unmistakable. His eyes were bright with warmth even before he lowered his medical mask. When he did, Greenwood was moved to tears.
“Thank you so much,” she told him. “I have been a fan of yours for years.”
City of Hope Chicago Reflects on the Visit
The institution described the encounter in deeply personal terms. “Their time together was filled with warmth, connection and the kind of joy that words cannot fully capture,” City of Hope Chicago wrote, adding that it is “deeply grateful to Randy and his wife, Mary Davis, for helping create such a meaningful moment for a cherished member of our City of Hope community.”
Travis is currently preparing for the next leg of his More Life Tour this fall.
