Professional bareback rider Cooper Filipek is recovering after suffering a broken back when a horse rolled over him during competition at the Cache County Fair and Rodeo in Logan, Utah, on August 6.
The 23-year-old, who holds the College National Finals Rodeo bareback riding championship, was transported for emergency care following the wreck. The rodeo community rallied around Filipek as news of the severity of his injuries spread.
Surgery Successful, Long Road Ahead
The day after the accident, Filipek’s father provided an update through rodeo journalist Kendra Santos, confirming that “surgery to stabilize the broken L5 vertebra in his low back with rods and screws was successful.” Despite the encouraging surgical outcome, Filipek is expected to be sidelined from competition for a full year.
By August 8, Santos shared hospital footage showing Filipek on his feet and moving with the aid of a walker — a notably swift and positive sign just two days after the injury.
A Rising Star in the Arena
Filipek had been building considerable momentum since turning professional. In January, he posted an 85.5-point ride at the National Western Stock Show in Denver to claim the bareback riding championship there — a result that underscored his standing as one of the sport’s emerging talents.
Prayers and well wishes from fans and fellow competitors have continued to pour in for Filipek as he begins what will be a lengthy rehabilitation before any potential return to the arena.
