The 59th Annual CMA Awards brought a powerful mix of performances, celebrity moments, and standout collaborations that kept country music fans talking. This year’s ceremony created the ideal setting for star artists to share the stage, reconnect with their audience, and celebrate the biggest achievements in the genre. It delivered emotional highlights and energetic surprises that confirmed why the 59th CMA Awards remain one of the most anticipated nights in country music.

59th Annual CMA Awards Highlights And Star Performances

The broadcast opened with immediate momentum. Entertainer of the year nominee Luke Combs stepped out first and performed “Back in the Saddle,” which pulled viewers in and raised the excitement in the room. Right after Combs wrapped his number, entertainer of the year nominee and CMA host Lainey Wilson walked onto the stage. She greeted the crowd, offered her opening words, and launched into a lively sequence of songs that connected with both the audience in the arena and those watching at home.

Her introduction showed her appreciation for the artists around her, and she spoke with a genuine tone that set the stage for the evening’s musical storytelling.

“I am thrilled I get to be here with you, my favorite country artists,” Wilson said. “Yours are the songs I’ve had queued up on my playlist when I’m around the fire, the ones that I crank up when I’m getting ready for the show, the ones that get me head-banging in the car — now I guess I could keep talking about your songs, but how about I get my buddy Charlie Worsham up here and we sing ’em for y’all?”

Lainey Wilson’s Opening Medley At The 59th CMA Awards

As soon as she finished speaking, Charlie Worsham joined her onstage with his guitar. Together, they performed a strong and memorable version of Chris Stapleton’s “White Horse.” The performance created an early spark in the night and reinforced the collaborative spirit that fans look forward to every year.

Wilson then moved off the stage and into the audience. She walked toward Ella Langley and serenaded her with Langley’s hit “you look like you love me.” The moment felt personal, relatable, and refreshing. It added warmth and charm to the otherwise high-energy sequence.

Her full medley featured several major hits and included live duets with the original artists sitting in the crowd. The songs included:

  • Lady A’s “Need You Now”
  • Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”
  • Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush”
  • Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder and Lead”

Every duet felt intentional. By performing beside the artists who created the songs, Wilson created a bridge between eras, styles, and voices while maintaining a smooth flow from one number to the next.

Keith Urban Returns To The CMA Stage

The last act of her medley brought Keith Urban into the spotlight. He appeared beside Wilson to perform “Where the Blacktop Ends,” creating a dynamic close to her opening number. The performance also marked an important milestone for Urban.

This appearance represented his first televised awards show since September, when his estranged wife Nicole Kidman filed for divorce. He did not walk the red carpet this year. Viewers may recall that at the 58th Annual CMA Awards, he walked the carpet alone. The last time Urban and Kidman attended the CMAs together was in 2023 during the 57th ceremony.

Urban’s presence this year carried emotional weight, but his performance focused on the music. It also offered a reminder of his long-standing connection to the CMA stage and his ongoing impact on the genre.

Additional Performances From Leading Country Artists

More standout moments came throughout the first half of the show. A mix of rising stars and established artists contributed to the strong lineup. These performances included:

  • Zach Top performing his hit “Guitar”
  • Megan Moroney singing “6 Months Later”
  • Chris Stapleton performing “Bad As I Used To Be” from the film “F1”

Each performance added a distinct sound and energy. Together, they showcased the wide range of country music’s style and storytelling in 2025.

Cody Johnson Shares Thanksgiving Preferences And Future Plans

In related entertainment coverage, Cody Johnson also drew attention when he answered a lighthearted holiday question. When asked whether he would rather spend Thanksgiving at Luke Combs’ home or Lainey Wilson’s house, he replied with an honest laugh.

“Probably Luke,” he said, followed by a chuckle. “I’m just saying, man, I’ve ate with the man, and he has good taste in food, so he’d probably pay someone to do it.”

Johnson joked that Combs might even place a full Honey Baked Ham order, ensuring the meal would be good. His answer also referenced the fact that Combs and his family are currently living in a temporary two-bedroom home while waiting for their house to be completed next year.

Although Johnson did not explain why he skipped choosing Wilson’s house, fans had fun speculating. Many pointed out that Wilson could likely prepare a great dish and that her fiancé Devlin “Duck” Hodges might bring duck meat from his own outdoor skills.

Cody Johnson’s Recovery And Award Achievements

Johnson is still taking it slow as he recovers from surgery on an eardrum injury. He expects to return to touring in 2026, which reassures fans hoping to see him back on stage soon.

His success continues to grow. He now holds five CMA Awards, including his newest win for Male Vocalist of the Year at the 59th Annual CMA Awards.

The 2025 CMA Awards delivered a night of unity, storytelling, and standout performances. From Lainey Wilson’s engaging medley to Keith Urban’s emotional return, the show offered something meaningful for every fan who celebrates the spirit of country music.
