Dolly Parton siblings are an essential part of her story and success. Born the fourth of twelve children in a one-room cabin in Tennessee, Dolly grew up surrounded by music, faith, and family. Her brothers and sisters helped shape her childhood and inspired many of the songs that later made her the Queen of Country Music.

When you think of country music royalty, one name always shines brightest — Dolly Parton. The superstar was born on January 19, 1946, in a tiny one-room cabin in Pittman Center, Tennessee, not far from Pigeon Forge. She is the fourth of twelve children, making her part of a big, close-knit Appalachian family.

Her father, Robert Lee Parton Sr., worked as a sharecropper, farmer, and construction worker to support the household. Her mother, Avie Lee Parton, raised the children, often singing old mountain ballads while tending to the family.

The Partons were extremely poor — Dolly has described their upbringing as “dirt poor.” When she was born, her father famously paid the doctor who delivered her with a sack of cornmeal, showing just how simple life was. Yet, despite financial struggles, the home was full of music, love, and faith.

Dolly Parton Siblings and Their Role in Music

Dolly often credits her mother’s side of the family for their deep musical roots. In a 2020 interview with PEOPLE, she explained:

“I grew up in a very musical family, all my mother’s people were very musical, so I was always around people playing instruments and singing, and my mom singing the old songs.”

That strong musical influence shaped Dolly’s path — and inspired many of her brothers and sisters to follow her into music. Some became singers, others played instruments, and a few chose to live private lives.

In 2015, Dolly even shared her family’s story with the world through her TV movie Coat of Many Colors and its sequel Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love. Both films included portrayals of her siblings, showing how deeply their stories intertwined with hers.

Let’s take a closer look at Dolly Parton’s 11 siblings, their lives, and how each one added to the remarkable Parton family legacy.

Willadeene Parton – The Eldest of Dolly Parton’s Siblings

  • Born: March 24, 1940
  • Role in family: Eldest child, often like a “second mother” to her younger siblings.
  • Career: Started singing gospel but later discovered her gift for writing. She released Smoky Mountain Memories: Stories from the Hearts of the Parton Family (1996), which gave fans a peek inside their upbringing. She also wrote a cookbook, All-Day Singing & Dinner on the Ground (1997).
  • Life today: Willadeene largely lives a private life but remains cherished as the sibling who first paved the way musically.

David Parton

  • Born: 1942
  • Career: The firstborn son, David did not pursue show business. Instead, he worked as a bridge builder superintendent, staying out of the spotlight.
  • Passing: David passed away on November 15, 2024, at the age of 82.

Coy Parton

  • Born: 1943
  • Career: Like his older brother David, Coy never sought fame. He lived quietly and privately, though he occasionally appeared in family photographs with Dolly.

Robert Lee Parton Jr.

  • Born: 1948
  • Career: Two years after Dolly was born, Robert Jr. joined the family. He, too, lived privately and did not pursue music, instead choosing a quieter path.

Stella Parton – Dolly Parton’s Singing Sister

  • Born: May 4, 1949
  • Career: Stella followed Dolly into country music and carved out a career of her own. Her debut single “I Want to Hold You in My Dreams Tonight” (1975) reached #9 on the Hot Country Songs chart. She went on to score more hits like “The Danger of a Stranger” and “Standard Lie Number One.”
  • Other talents: Stella is also an author and actress. She published her memoir Tell It Sister, Tell It (2011) and has written cookbooks. She acted in Dolly’s TV movies, playing the character Corla Bass, and served as the family’s representative on set.
  • Today: Stella continues to perform and advocate for women in country music.

Cassie Parton

  • Born: February 12, 1951
  • Career: Cassie loved gospel music and performed with her sisters. Later, she joined Dolly’s My People show at Dollywood in 2013, singing alongside her brother Randy.
  • Life today: Cassie mostly lives out of the public eye.

Randy Parton – Musical Brother in Dolly Parton’s Family

  • Born: December 15, 1953
  • Career: Randy was both a singer and musician. He released albums such as There Was a Dream and had hits like “Shot Full of Love.” He recorded duets with Dolly including “You Are My Christmas” and played guitar and bass in her band. In 1986, he even headlined his own show at Dollywood.
  • Passing: Randy died in January 2021 after a cancer battle. Dolly said singing with him “will always be a highlight” in her career.

Larry Parton

  • Born: July 1955
  • Passing: Larry tragically passed away just four days after birth. Dolly, only nine years old at the time, was deeply affected. His death was portrayed in Coat of Many Colors and is remembered as a moment that shaped the family’s bond.

Floyd Parton – Songwriting Brother in Dolly Parton’s Family

  • Born: June 1, 1957
  • Career: Floyd was a gifted songwriter. He co-wrote Dolly’s #1 hit “Nickels and Dimes” and wrote “Rockin’ Years,” which became a chart-topper when Dolly recorded it with Ricky Van Shelton in 1991.
  • Passing: Floyd passed away in 2018 at age 61. At his funeral, the family sang “Rockin’ Years” together in his honor.

Freida Parton

  • Born: June 1, 1957 (Floyd’s twin sister)
  • Career: Freida chose a different musical path, performing in a punk rock band before returning occasionally to country music with her family. She also provided backing vocals for Dolly’s albums.
  • Later life: In 2014, Freida became an ordained minister and opened the Parton Family Wedding Chapel & Antiques in Sevierville, Tennessee, combining her love of faith and community.

Rachel Parton – The Youngest of Dolly Parton’s Siblings

  • Born: August 31, 1959 (youngest sibling)
  • Career: Rachel first joined Dolly as a backing vocalist before branching into acting. She starred in the TV version of 9 to 5 (1982–1988), playing Doralee Rhodes — the same role Dolly played in the film.
  • Today: Rachel continues to collaborate with Dolly. Together, they wrote a cookbook called Good Lookin’ Cookin’, featuring 80 family recipes.
