A man was arrested Thursday morning after bypassing security at the TODAY show’s New York City studio and directing a racial slur at co-anchor Craig Melvin.
The incident took place around 9 AM ET on July 16th, when the unidentified man entered the studio through a stairwell and made his way backstage without authorization. Law enforcement sources told TMZ that the intruder was unarmed. Studio staff and security intervened quickly, and the man was taken into custody. As of press time, his identity has not been publicly released.
What Happened Inside the Studio
According to TMZ, the man initially sought out weatherman Al Roker upon entering the building. When he was unable to locate Roker, he approached Melvin, allegedly lunging at the co-anchor while shouting a racial slur. A source who spoke with PEOPLE confirmed the broad details, describing the man as having “confronted” Melvin with racial slurs audible during the encounter.
