A van drove into a crowd gathered for Berlin’s Christopher Street Day on Saturday, July 25, killing one person and injuring at least 15 others in what the city’s mayor has described as a direct attack on an open society.
The incident unfolded in Berlin’s Tiergarten park, near the route where the Pride march had passed earlier in the day. Christopher Street Day is one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ gatherings and had drawn significant crowds to the German capital when the white van struck several people before coming to a stop against a tree. Police immediately ordered attendees to clear the area and deployed a large number of officers to manage the scene and begin an investigation.
Van Found Abandoned, Motive Unknown

Mayor Condemns the Attack
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner addressed the incident on social media, calling it “an attack on our free and open-minded society.” Writing in German, Wegner extended his thoughts to those affected and expressed confidence in law enforcement. “My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and their friends,” he wrote. “I have confidence in the police and security authorities, who will be investigating with the utmost urgency.”
