Shania Twain has revealed Harry Styles as her candidate for a modern name-drop in “That Don’t Impress Me Much” — and she’s already put the lyric swap into practice on stage.
In a July 28 interview with Harper’s BAZAAR, Twain revisited her 1997 Come On Over classic and floated the idea of updating its famously cheeky celebrity reference. The original line calls out Brad Pitt by name — a nod that has held up for nearly three decades — but Twain suggested the song could accommodate fresh company. The timing is no accident: the two artists have developed a genuine friendship, and this summer Twain served as the opening act for Harry Styles across a 12-date run at London’s Wembley Stadium on his Together, Together Tour.
Why Brad Pitt Made the Cut in the First Place
Twain explained the original inspiration in a 2017 conversation with Billboard. While writing Come On Over, she was struck by the public frenzy surrounding leaked nude photographs of Pitt. “I just thought, ‘I don’t know what all the fuss is about,'” she said at the time, adding that she wasn’t targeting him personally and that “it could have been any gorgeous guy.” The name landed because it captured a cultural moment — not because she had anything against the actor.
A New Name Enters the Lyric
Nearly 30 years on, Twain told Harper’s BAZAAR she has no intention of removing Pitt from the song — though she admitted some uncertainty about his feelings on the matter. “I’ve never met Brad Pitt, and I just don’t know whether he’s avoiding me because he’s offended that I put him in the lyric of the song, or whether he’s just never heard the song before,” she said. Her proposed addition, however, carries a very different spirit: “Maybe I would add some people, like… Who do you think you are? Harry Styles?” — a playful tribute rather than a dismissal.
