Taylor Sheridan has quietly built one of television’s most recognizable stock companies, returning to the same pool of actors across nearly every film and series he has created.
From his early screenwriting work on Sicario and Hell or High Water — the latter earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay — to the sprawling Paramount Network and Paramount+ empire that includes Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Landman, and The Madison, Sheridan has made a habit of rewarding loyalty. In his own words: “If you’ve got a show pony, show ’em!” The result is a web of crossover casting that spans decades, genres, and platforms — with some actors appearing in as many as eight separate projects.
The Sheridan Universe’s Most Prolific Repeaters
At the top of the frequency chart sits James Jordan, who has appeared in eight Sheridan projects: Wind River, Yellowstone, Those Who Wish Me Dead, Mayor of Kingstown, 1883, Lioness, Landman, and The Madison. Across those titles he has played a drilling-site security guard, a livestock agent, a frontier trail cook named Cookie, a CIA quick-reaction force operator called Two Cups, and a petroleum engineer named Dale Bradley — demonstrating a range that Sheridan clearly values.
Hugh Dillon traces a similarly deep partnership. After playing a security officer in Wind River and Sheriff Donnie Haskell in Yellowstone, Dillon went on to co-create Mayor of Kingstown with Sheridan, where he also stars as Detective Ian Ferguson. Dawn Olivieri has logged four collaborations — Claire Dutton in 1883, corporate strategist Sarah Atwood in Yellowstone, Army Sergeant Amber Whalen in two episodes of Lioness, and Ellen in The Madison. Gil Birmingham has appeared in Hell or High Water, Wind River, and Yellowstone — where he is a series regular as tribal chairman Thomas Rainwater — and reprised that role on the CBS series Marshals.
Several actors have built their Sheridan credentials across the franchise’s Western period pieces. Sam Elliott earned a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Male Performance in a Miniseries or Television Movie for his work as Shea Brennan in 1883, then returned to the universe in Landman Season 2 as T.L. Norris, Tommy Norris’s estranged father. Billy Bob Thornton made his Sheridan debut as Fort Worth lawman Marshal Jim Courtright in 1883 before taking the lead in Landman as crisis manager Tommy Norris. Martin Sensmeier has appeared in Wind River, Yellowstone, and 1883, while Tokala Black Elk has crossed over between Wind River, Yellowstone, and 1883 as well.
The Broader Roster
Two-time Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner anchored Wind River as wildlife agent Cory Lambert before taking on the lead role of Mike McLusky in Mayor of Kingstown. Graham Greene — described in the source as the late Graham Greene — portrayed the Wind River tribal police chief in Wind River, Crow elder Spotted Eagle in 1883, and the Indigenous character Oldsmoke in Tulsa King. Kelsey Asbille connects Wind River, where she played the murdered Natalie Hanson, to Yellowstone, where she stars as Monica Dutton. LaMonica Garrett played Thomas, Shea Brennan’s trail-scout companion in 1883, and CIA operative Tucker in Lioness. Michelle Randolph went from Elizabeth Strafford in 1923 to Ainsley Norris, Tommy Norris’s teenage daughter, in Landman.
Other notable crossovers include Dylan Kenin across four projects (Sicario, Hell or High Water, Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown); Jon Bernthal across three films (Sicario, Wind River, Those Who Wish Me Dead); Neal McDonough as antagonists in both Yellowstone and Tulsa King; Gratiela Brancusi from 1883 to Mayor of Kingstown; Matt Gerald across Mayor of Kingstown, Lioness, and the final season of Yellowstone; and Bart Johnson — married to fellow list member Robyn Lively — appearing in the last season of Yellowstone and as recurring character Patrick Ramsey in Landman. Lively herself played Senator Amanda Albright in Lioness and waitress Ellie in Landman. Sheridan even cast himself across four projects: a small role in Hell or High Water, horse trainer Travis Wheatley in Yellowstone, legendary cattleman Charles Goodnight in two episodes of 1883, and Delta Force operator Cody Spears in three episodes of Lioness Season 2.
With newer series such as Dutton Ranch — which features Landman Season 1 actor J.R. Villarreal — already expanding the roster, the Sheridan stock company shows no signs of shrinking.
