Luke Combs has accumulated 20 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Country Airplay chart — a pace of roughly two per year across a decade that has cemented his place among country music’s defining modern voices.
Taste of Country has ranked Combs at No. 2 on its ongoing series spotlighting the 25 Most Important Modern Country Artists, pairing that placement with a staff-curated list of his 10 best songs. The project, which began rolling out rankings on June 13, assigns each featured artist their own top songs gallery. The No. 1 artist on the overall list is set to be revealed on July 7.
A Career Built on Consistency and Range
Combs, born March 2, 1990, near Charlotte, North Carolina, was studying toward a business or criminal justice degree near Appalachian State University when he began performing live. With less than a year left before graduation, he left school to pursue country music full time. After years of rejections from Nashville executives, he eventually signed with Sony Music Nashville, and his debut single “Hurricane” — released roughly a decade ago — announced an artist who would rarely slow down.
Beyond the chart statistics, the 36-year-old has taken home two Entertainer of the Year awards, and his catalog extends well past his radio singles. Seven additional songs reached the top 10 on airplay charts, and his reputation as a genuine album artist — a rarity in the current streaming era — adds another dimension to his standing in the format. Taste of Country’s criteria for the broader list weighed chart performance, streaming numbers, ticket sales, perceived influence, awards, and recent releases.
What Sets Combs Apart
While love and heartbreak anchor much of his output, Combs has demonstrated a willingness to push into unexpected emotional and tonal territory, a quality the outlet credits as a key reason he ranks so highly on the list. Since marrying Nicole and starting a family, he has deliberately pulled back from the road to prioritize his home life — a choice that has shaped the pace and direction of his career in recent years.
With the No. 1 artist on Taste of Country’s overall ranking still to be unveiled on July 7, Combs’ placement at No. 2 stands as a strong indicator of just how high the bar has been set for whoever claims the top spot.
