Netflix has yet to greenlight a sixth season of Sweet Magnolias, even as the show’s newly released Season 5 drives fresh speculation about the drama’s future.
Season 5 of the South Carolina-set romance series landed on Netflix on June 11, making it far too early for the streamer to assess completion data and commit to another run. The show, based on Sherryl Woods’ book series, centers on three lifelong best friends — Maddie Townsend, Dana Sue Sullivan and Helen Decatur — navigating love, family and careers in the fictional small town of Serenity, S.C. JoAnna Garcia Swisher, a former star of Reba, leads the cast alongside Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley.
What the Timeline Suggests
A renewal announcement for Season 6 may still be months away. Season 4 premiered in February 2025, and Netflix announced Season 5 that April. If the production cycle follows a similar pattern, a Season 6 decision could realistically come around August 2026.
Should Netflix move forward, the core cast — including Logan Allen, Anneliese Judge, Justin Bruening and Jamie Lynn Spears — would be expected to return. One open question involves Carson Rowland, whose character was written off Season 5 to pursue a music career on tour. Showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson confirmed to Us Weekly that Rowland made the “decision” to sit out the season, adding, “In his leaving, we wanted to make the best of the situation and look at what happens when people leave the people they love to chase a dream.” Whether Rowland would factor into a potential Season 6 remains unresolved.
Where Season 5 Left the Characters
The Season 5 finale set up several compelling threads heading into any future installment. Dana Sue and her husband Ronnie ended the season at an impasse after he placed his new business above their family, with Dana Sue choosing to move into her own apartment. Maddie, meanwhile, committed to supporting husband Cal’s effort to bring a new baseball team to Serenity, where he will serve as head coach. Helen and Eric, having finally married, closed out the season preparing to begin the foster parenting process.
With no trailer, no premiere date and no official renewal yet confirmed, fans of the series will be watching Netflix’s next move closely in the months ahead.
