Jayden Adams, the 25-year-old South African midfielder who helped Bafana Bafana make history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has died suddenly, sending shockwaves through the country’s football community.
The South African Football Players Union confirmed Adams’ passing on Saturday, just weeks after he featured in South Africa’s landmark run to the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup. A key figure at Mamelodi Sundowns, Adams had cemented his reputation as one of the most promising young players in the country before his death cut that trajectory short.
A Historic Tournament Run Cut Short by Tragedy
Adams played a meaningful role in South Africa’s 2026 World Cup campaign, starting two of the team’s three group-stage matches. He also came off the bench during Bafana Bafana’s 1-0 victory over South Korea on June 24 — the result that sealed the nation’s first-ever advancement to the knockout stage of the tournament.

Police Open Inquest as Cause of Death Remains Unknown
According to ESPN, Western Cape South African Police Service spokesperson F.C. van Wyk confirmed that officers opened an inquest after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered Saturday morning at a property on Military Road in Schotschekloof. Officials have not disclosed a cause of death.
As the inquest continues, tributes for Adams are pouring in from across South African football, reflecting both the scale of his loss and the mark he left on the sport during a career that ended far too soon.
