A captive leopard named Xena turns out to be one of Dutton Ranch‘s most talked-about subplots — and Episode 8 finally reveals her fate.
Actors Finn Little and Natalie Alyn Lind, who play Carter and Oreana respectively on the Yellowstone universe series, sat down with Taste of Country’s Adison Haager ahead of the episode’s release. The conversation, which covers their experience working alongside the big cat, is set to air during the Dutton Rules podcast, live at 2PM CT on YouTube on Tuesday.
How Xena Entered the Story
The leopard first appeared in Episode 4, when Carter spends the day with a rancher named Dwight White, played by Ray McKinnon. After a long afternoon of trading stories and drinking beer, Dwight drives Carter deep into his property after dark and illuminates a caged leopard he calls Xena. The animal resurfaces in Episode 5, when Carter brings Oreana out to feed her — shortly before Dwight is shot in the back by an arriving sheriff under circumstances that remain unclear.
Despite working in close proximity to a live leopard, neither Little nor Lind received any formal training beforehand. The on-set protocol, as Little described it, was straightforward and firm: everyone stood back, the animal was brought in, and no one approached the cage.
Lind was candid about the experience. “She was so beautiful until she starts chewing her bone and then it’s terrifying,” she said.
Where Xena Ends Up — and What Almost Happened
Fan theories ran wild in the lead-up to Episode 8, with some Dutton Rules podcast listeners speculating that Xena might attack and kill a character named Rob Will. The show took a quieter route. When Carter returns to Dwight’s property in Episode 8 and attempts to blackmail Sheriff Handy Wade, he asks about the leopard. The sheriff’s answer is straightforward: Xena has been relocated to Texas Zoofari Park in Kaufman — a real facility in Texas.
But the storyline came close to ending very differently. Little revealed that an alternate arc was developed in which Carter and Oreana actually released the leopard. “That was a version,” he said. “But that never got filmed.”
With just two episodes remaining in Dutton Ranch Season 1, the full interview with Little and Lind is available on the Dutton Rules podcast for fans looking for more behind-the-scenes detail heading into the finale stretch.
