Taylor Sheridan may have another drama quietly in development — a Scotland-set series called The Laird that could extend his sprawling television universe in an unexpected direction.
According to The Sun, Sheridan wrote The Laird, a Scottish-themed drama that is scheduled to begin filming next month. The series is expected to stream on Paramount+, likely in 2027. Details remain sparse, and major entertainment trades including Deadline and Variety have not confirmed the project, leaving some uncertainty around whether the reporting reflects solid sourcing or speculation.
What We Know About The Laird
The Sun’s television insider describes The Laird as a drama that examines historical connections between Scotland and America, including the role wealthy Scottish landowners — known as “lairds” — played in the transatlantic slave trade. No cast announcements have been made by The Sun or any other outlet covering the story.
Could This Be a Yellowstone Prequel?
The premise will immediately raise eyebrows among fans of the Yellowstone franchise. Both 1883 and 1923 established that the Dutton family’s origins trace back to the Scottish Highlands, and 1883 featured Tim McGraw as Dutton patriarch James Dutton. A series rooted in Scottish landed gentry and transatlantic migration would fit neatly — if speculatively — into that lineage, potentially serving as the earliest prequel yet in Sheridan’s expanding historical universe.
Sheridan has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to ground fictional characters within authentic cultural and historical settings, so a project reaching back to 19th-century Scotland would not be out of character for him.
For now, the next confirmed entry in the Sheridan universe is Season 3 of Lioness, premiering August 2, followed by anticipated returns of Tulsa King and Landman. Frisco King and Season 2 of Dutton Ranch are also in the pipeline, giving fans a crowded slate to watch before The Laird — if it is real — would arrive.
