Kelsea Ballerini broke down mid-performance at the Barefoot Country Music Festival on Friday, June 19, when the grief of losing her dog Dibs caught up with her during a live rendition of “Penthouse.”
It was the first time Ballerini had sung the song since Dibs died in January, following a nearly year-and-a-half battle with inoperable heart cancer. The moment hit hardest at the lyric referencing him directly — “I bought the house with a fence / Enough room for some kids / A backyard for Dibs” — and she stopped, crouching down at the edge of the stage, visibly overwhelmed.
Crowd Steps In as Ballerini Asks for Help
Rather than push through alone, Ballerini turned to her audience. “Sorry, I haven’t sang this since he passed away. Can you help me a little bit?” she said, holding the microphone out toward the crowd to carry the chorus. At one point she mouthed “Thank you” to the fans singing back at her. She steadied herself enough to return to the microphone for the final verse and closed the song with a long, grateful look at the crowd.
A Decade With Her “Soul Dog”
Ballerini adopted Dibs, a doodle, in 2015 and named him after a song from her debut album. When he died in January, she posted a tribute describing him as her “soul dog” and reflecting on a decade they spent together. “There are no words to articulate his role in my life, but I couldn’t have done the last ten years without him,” she wrote, adding, “I feel like the luckiest girl in the world that I got to be his dog mom, greatest gift of my life.”
Dibs had been diagnosed with inoperable heart cancer in August 2024. At the time, veterinarians gave him roughly four months to live — a prognosis he surpassed by nearly a year. Ballerini shared the diagnosis publicly and noted she planned to keep him comfortable with medication through what was described as a difficult prognosis.
With “Penthouse” now back in her live set, fans will be watching to see how Ballerini continues to navigate the song and the loss it carries on the road ahead.
