Netflix’s highly anticipated reboot of Little House on the Prairie dropped on July 9, 2026, bringing the Ingalls family back to screens for the first time in more than four decades — with an entirely new cast stepping into some of television’s most beloved roles.
The original NBC series ran from 1974 to 1983, drawing millions of viewers to its adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s autobiographical books about frontier life. When Netflix announced early in 2025 that a new version was in development, the response was immediate and enthusiastic. The rebooted first season, consisting of eight episodes released simultaneously, draws from the third book in the Little House series and centers on the Ingalls family relocating to the rural town of Independence, Kansas.
A New Cast Takes the Prairie
Casting is where the reboot departs most visibly from its predecessor. Alice Halsey, 11, plays Laura Ingalls — the story’s narrator and central figure, described in Netflix’s own cast guide as “observant, tender, strong-willed, and hot-tempered” with a resistance to conventional expectations of femininity. Halsey previously appeared in Lessons in Chemistry and Days of our Lives. Melissa Gilbert originated the role in the NBC series.
Luke Bracey inherits the role of Charles “Pa” Ingalls, the part that made Michael Landon a household name. Landon was also a driving creative force behind the original production, serving as executive producer, writer, and director. Bracey is known to audiences from Point Break (2015), Holidate (2020), and Elvis (2022).
Crosby Fitzgerald takes on Caroline “Ma” Ingalls, a role Karen Grassle held throughout the original run. Fitzgerald has appeared previously in Palm Royale, where she played a character named Sylvia. Rounding out the core family is Skywalker Hughes, 14, as older sister Mary Ingalls — a character originally portrayed by Melissa Sue Anderson. Hughes has credits in the western series Joe Pickett and the 2024 film Ordinary Angels.
Already Renewed Before the Dust Settles
Netflix has already confirmed a second season of the series, signaling confidence in the reboot’s prospects before audience reaction has had time to fully crystallize.
The complete first season of the new Little House on the Prairie is streaming now, exclusively on Netflix.
