Kelly Reilly says Taylor Sheridan is set to play a significantly larger creative role in Season 2 of Dutton Ranch — a shift she describes as something the cast and crew genuinely earned.
In a candid conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Reilly, who reprises her role as Beth Dutton in the Yellowstone spinoff, opened up about the challenges of navigating Season 1 without Sheridan serving as the show’s primary creative engine. The first season also saw a behind-the-scenes shakeup when showrunner Chad Feehan stepped down and was replaced by Benjamin Cavell, adding another layer of uncertainty to an already unsteady transition.
Uncertain Ground
Reilly was direct about her early doubts. “I was very uncertain of what this would be without his words,” she told the outlet. “I didn’t know if it was gonna work. I didn’t know if she was going to work.” She described the experience as a reckoning for the character herself, saying part of Beth Dutton “had to die” before she could find out who the character was in this new chapter of the story.
The actress also acknowledged a collective learning curve for everyone involved. “Everything comes to an end, and his time with these characters as creative leader, it ended,” she said. “So there was a moment where we were trying to figure out, ‘How do we do this without him?'”
Sheridan Steps Back In
Having worked through that uncertainty, Reilly says the dynamic has shifted heading into Season 2. “We talk to him now about what the next season could be, and he wants to be involved,” she revealed. “So that feels like we earned this second season from all the work we’ve done before.”
The renewed engagement comes as Sheridan continues to oversee one of television’s most expansive creative universes. Beyond the Dutton-centered franchise — which includes Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Dutton Ranch, and Marshals — he is also the driving force behind Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, Lioness, and Tulsa King. Reilly stopped short of detailing exactly what his increased involvement will look like, but for fans of the franchise, his return to a more hands-on role with the Dutton story is the clearest signal yet that Season 2 could mark a meaningful course correction.
