Taylor Sheridan is pushing back on years of speculation about Kevin Costner’s departure from Yellowstone, arguing the actor’s exit was baked into the show’s original design — not the product of a behind-the-scenes feud.
Speaking on The Bill Simmons Podcast, the Yellowstone creator offered his most direct account yet of how Costner’s role as John Dutton was structured from the beginning. The western aired on Paramount Network from 2018 to 2024, following the Dutton family — including Beth (Kelly Reilly), Rip (Cole Hauser), Kayce (Luke Grimes), and Jamie (Wes Bentley) — as they fought to protect their Montana ranch. Costner’s ultimate departure sparked months of public speculation about scheduling conflicts and creative tensions between the two.
A Three-Season Deal, Extended by Network Pressure
Sheridan revealed that Costner’s contract originally covered only the first three seasons of the show. “He was only supposed to be in the first three seasons,” Sheridan said. “That was in his contract. In my mind, that’s when his youngest son takes over [on the show].” The plan shifted, Sheridan explained, because the network was reluctant to move forward without Costner at the center of the series. “The network was so scared of not having Kevin be a part of it, even though Kevin was ready,” Sheridan said. “He was ready to go. He had other things he wanted to do, but he stayed on for another two seasons.”
Costner’s character was ultimately killed off during the show’s final season, closing out John Dutton’s storyline on the series’ own terms.
Sheridan Has Consistently Denied a Permanent Rift
These comments align with remarks Sheridan made in 2023, when he acknowledged that Costner’s exit reshaped how John Dutton’s arc concluded but rejected reports of a lasting falling out. At the time, Sheridan noted that Costner wanted to leave to focus on directing Horizon: An American Saga, and that both sides had worked toward an arrangement to facilitate his departure. Sheridan described their disagreements as something they were always able to work through, stopping short of characterizing them as a personal feud. He also praised Costner’s portrayal of John Dutton, calling the character “symbolic and powerful.”
Even with Costner gone, John Dutton’s presence continues to reverberate across the franchise — the character has been referenced multiple times in the spinoff Dutton Ranch, which premiered in May, suggesting the patriarch’s shadow over the Sheridan universe is far from finished.
