Joe Nichols accidentally sang the wrong verse of “Family Tradition” alongside Hank Williams Jr. — and spent days haunted by the thought that he’d let a legend down.
Nichols shared the story during an appearance on Taste of Country Nights, recounting an awkward onstage moment from his 2025 tour with Williams. The two are back on the road together again in 2026, but the memory of that stumble clearly lingered long enough to make for a compelling story.
A Four-Minute Warning and the Wrong Verse
When Williams invited Nichols to join him for the closing number during their first run together, Nichols called it an extraordinary experience — singing alongside one of his idols on stage. He assumed it was a one-time gesture. It wasn’t. The next time they shared a bill, a member of Williams’ crew tracked Nichols down just four minutes before the song, finding him already changed out of his show clothes for the night. Rather than walk out in sweats, Nichols yanked his damp stage outfit back on and sprinted to the wings.
He arrived so late that he’d missed the opening of the song entirely and had no idea where Williams was in it. A stagehand guessed he was on the verse beginning “I’ve loved some ladies” — but Williams had already sung that verse. Nichols went out and sang it again anyway.
‘I Felt Like I Disappointed My Dad’
Afterward, Williams came offstage and pulled Nichols in for a hug, saying something Nichols couldn’t fully make out over the roar of the band. He caught only the tail end: “but not you.” At the time, it read like a compliment. It wasn’t until their next performance together — when Nichols was prepared and ready — that the full meaning clicked. Standing in the wings, he suddenly realized Williams had been telling him that everyone else had messed up that song at some point, but he hadn’t expected Nichols to be the one to do it.
“It felt like I really disappointed someone that I cared greatly about,” Nichols said. “It ate at me. I couldn’t bear it.” The redemption came quickly: after nailing the song the next time around, Williams walked over and said simply, “Perfect.”
With Nichols and Williams sharing the stage again in 2026, fans of both artists will have plenty of chances to see whether “Family Tradition” makes another appearance in the set.
